For many families, putting food on the table is a challenge without an easy solution. Rising costs, unexpected hardships, and busy schedules can make accessing healthy groceries difficult.
That’s where the YMCA of Greater Richmond’s Mobile Food Distribution program steps in.
Each month, the YMCA partners with FeedMore, Central Virginia’s core hunger-relief organization, to bring groceries directly into communities where they’re needed most. Through mobile distributions across the Richmond region, families can access fresh and shelf-stable foods in a convenient, caring way.
Across sites in Ashland, Chester, and Manchester, these distributions typically serve around 120 vehicles and approximately 350 families each month.
In early March, the SPARK team had the opportunity to volunteer at one of these distributions in Ashland, helping support an effort that serves hundreds of families every month.
Meeting families where they are
On a cold, rainy morning in early March, volunteers gathered in the parking lot of the Ashland Junction Shopping Center, where the Patrick Henry YMCA hosts its monthly mobile food pantry.
More than 30 volunteers—including the SPARK team—worked together to prepare groceries delivered by FeedMore. Volunteers packed bags with items like frozen chickens, carrots, juice, cereal, chips, and boxes of mac and cheese.
Soon, two lines of cars began moving steadily through the distribution area as volunteers loaded groceries directly into vehicles, helping ensure families received food for the weeks ahead.
Within a short window, volunteers helped serve 336 families, ensuring hundreds of people across the community had food for the weeks ahead. Any remaining food was routed to other food pantries and organizations across the region so that nothing went to waste.
More than just groceries
For many volunteers, the experience was both eye-opening and deeply meaningful.
As SPARK employee Kaity Myers helped load groceries into one of the vehicles, a simple interaction stayed with her.
“While I was placing some soft drinks into a car, the person looked at me, smiled, and said, ‘Thank you so much,’” she said.
“For most of the day, I just felt like a person doing a job to help someone get their groceries for the month. But that small interaction was a beautiful reminder of the actual impact we were making.”
Moments like these capture the heart of programs like the YMCA’s mobile food distribution. While the logistics involve trucks, pallets, and volunteers working quickly to serve hundreds of families, the real impact happens in these small human exchanges.
How you can get involved
Programs like this rely heavily on volunteers to help pack groceries, organize supplies, and load food safely and efficiently. Without that community support, the scale and reach of the program simply wouldn’t be possible.
The YMCA of Greater Richmond offers many opportunities for individuals and organizations to volunteer and support their work.
Whether it’s helping with food distributions, supporting youth programs, or assisting with community events, volunteers play a vital role in helping the YMCA serve families across the region.

Living out SPARK’s mission
At SPARK, community service is an important part of who we are. As our vision statement says:
“We deliver excellence to our clients, so that we can give greatness to our community.”
Volunteering with the YMCA and FeedMore was a powerful reminder of the many opportunities we have to live out that mission and show up for one another. We’re grateful to have been part of it, and grateful for the impact that organizations like YMCA and FeedMore have on this community.
