Spring cleaning a home-away-from-home for patients and families: SPARK returns to The Doorways

Earlier this spring, the SPARK team returned to The Doorways for a second volunteer day, this time participating in what the team calls a “Windex Party.”

The name is lighthearted, but the work matters.

Over the course of a few hours, the team focused on cleaning and maintaining the exterior of the building. We washed windows, wiped down railings, swept walkways, and cleared away pollen, dust, debris, and cobwebs from ceilings and light fixtures. Masks were a must.

It’s hands-on, behind-the-scenes work (a lot like engineering!): the kind that often goes unnoticed but makes a real difference for the people who rely on this space every day.

Making access to care possible for thousands

If you’re not familiar with The Doorways, it’s the second largest healthcare hospitality house in the country (and the largest donation-funded one), providing lodging and support for patients and their loved ones who need to be close to the hospital, but not far from the feeling of home.

(You can read more about The Doorways’ mission and story on their site, or in our previous article here.)

The scale of their impact is remarkable:

  • 9,156 individuals served in 2025

  • 57,455 nights of lodging provided

  • 172,365 meals made available

  • 7,839 hours of volunteer service contributed

And the need is real:

  • 37% of guests say they would not be able to access medical care without The Doorways

  • 92% say their stay had a positive impact on their wellbeing

  • 92% say it helped their family avoid financial distress

For many families, The Doorways isn’t just helpful – it’s essential.

Why this work matters

The Doorways operates every day of the year, supporting an average of around 150 guests each night. And because more than half of guests are unable to contribute the suggested nightly donation, the organization depends heavily on the generosity of its community.

That includes volunteers.

From preparing meals, to organizing supplies, to helping maintain the building itself, volunteers play a critical role in making sure The Doorways can continue to provide a clean, safe, and welcoming environment for every guest who walks through its doors. Even something as simple as clean windows, dust-free railings, and well-kept outdoor walkways contributes to that experience.

How you can get involved

The Doorways relies on volunteers year-round, and there are many ways to help for both individuals and groups.

From meal preparation to donation drives to events like the “Windex Party,” every contribution helps create a space where patients and families can find comfort during incredibly difficult moments.
