Pitching In (Again!) at the 2026 Special Olympics Virginia Summer Games

We are hands-on problem solvers who know that big successes rely on the work done out of the spotlight. We might not be athletes, but we know how to do some heavy lifting. At SPARK, tackling the behind-the-scenes details isn't just a step in our engineering process—it’s where we believe the most meaningful impact is made.

That’s why our team was thrilled to return as volunteers for this year’s Special Olympics Virginia Summer Games. Held at the University of Richmond, this incredible, high-energy weekend brings together thousands of athletes, coaches, and chaperones from across the state to celebrate inclusion, joy, and athletic excellence.

Building the Foundation for Game Day

Just like last year, our crew was on-site to help with event setup and organization. From hauling supplies to organizing spaces, we worked to lay the groundwork for a smooth and unforgettable weekend.

When you are deep in the logistics of event prep, it can sometimes feel disconnected from the main event. As the SPARK team noted, "We played a tiny part, and one that did not involve directly working with the athletes."

But in product development, we know that unseen, foundational work is exactly what allows a final product to succeed. Volunteering at the Summer Games is very much the same. Our team recognized that the preparation done by SPARK—alongside several other incredible local volunteer groups—served a highly specific purpose.

Our time was what "allowed game day volunteers to focus on their time with the athletes instead of worrying about where the box of masks are," said Shane Diller, Co-Owner of SPARK. “Our time made sure the athletes got undivided attention and got to shine." By handling the less glamorous tasks, we were able to help set the stage for the real stars of the weekend.

Want to Get Involved?

Events of this scale rely heavily on community support, and the Special Olympics Virginia team is always looking for extra hands.  Local programs are always in need of volunteers to join them in making sure that athletes can practice each week and be able to attend events like Summer Games.
