“We felt comfortable that the SPARK team was going to take care of us. They really advocated for us with the factory, made sure we understood everything, and were just so detailed and honest. We absolutely recommend them (just not to our competitors).”

Sling Bottle

Consumer Product Startup

Sling Bottle gives people a hands-free way to stay hydrated with their flagship product, a retractable water bottle designed to be worn. It moves with you: no sloshing, no spills, and no hassle. Built around an internal spring mechanism and custom-molded components, the Sling Bottle delivers a smoother, more comfortable way to bring your water with you when you’re out and about.

The Challenge

Sling Bottle came to SPARK with a prototype from their overseas manufacturer, but some concerns about the design and functionality. The factory’s early version of the bottle’s sling mechanism felt underdeveloped and didn’t live up to the team’s vision.

They needed more than a quick fix. They needed a true engineering partner to redesign that crucial mechanism from the ground up, make sure they felt great about the resulting product, and get them to market.

The Solution

SPARK stepped in as Sling Bottle’s engineering department, taking ownership of both the product development process and the technical integrity of the design.

SPARK did the following:

  • Conducted product teardowns to benchmark the quality and feel the client was aiming for

  • Adapted proven design strategies from these teardowns to inform a new internal mechanism for the Sling Bottle

  • Defined precise specifications for the core functional component at the heart of the product

  • Applied SPARK’s deep expertise in design for injection molding to re-engineer the Sling Bottle’s complex assembly of custom-molded parts

  • Delivered detailed, factory-ready documentation to support high-quality manufacturing

  • Advocated for the client throughout manufacturing, reviewing pre-production samples, catching errors, and requesting corrections on Sling Bottle’s behalf

SPARK didn’t just improve the product, we protected it, helping our client maintain control and quality, and ensuring the final design met a higher standard than the “just good enough” approach often taken in factory-led development.

The Impact

As a result of our collaboration, Sling Bottle was able to:

  • Transform a factory prototype into a fully engineered, manufacturable product

  • Maintain control over quality and IP

  • Recapture the precision and feel missing in early factory interpretations

  • Gain a trusted, long-term engineering partner to help them scale

  • Build credibility with retailers and customers through a polished, high-quality design

“We like to say SPARK became part of our Sling family. They saw how serious we were, and they matched that care and passion. They told us the truth, even when it wasn’t what we wanted to hear, and that’s why we trust them. We know SPARK will go to bat for us every single time.”

Why it matters

Trying to develop a product by going directly to a factory often means accepting compromises. SPARK gave Sling Bottle more than just a better product; we gave them control, clarity, and confidence. By advocating for quality, providing honest feedback, and leading with engineering integrity, SPARK helped a young brand avoid costly missteps and bring a high quality, innovative product to market.
