“From the beginning, SPARK asked the right questions, not just about what Valterra wanted, but about what the customer needed. We worked hand in hand, combining our RV industry knowledge with SPARK’s product development expertise.”

Valterra
(A Dometic company)

RV Waste Management Systems

Valterra is known across the RV world as the go-to name in gate valves, hoses, and systems that manage gray and black water. After being acquired by Dometic, a global leader in RV and marine systems, Valterra was expected to develop new products that could drive revenue and reinforce their position in the market.

To kick off that effort, a new product manager turned to SPARK to explore what the next generation of tote tank systems could be.

The Challenge

Valterra’s initial goal was open-ended: find meaningful innovation in a mature product category.

SPARK began with exploration focused on market research and opportunity identification. The concept work was strong enough to secure corporate approval and funding for full development. But once the program was approved at the Dometic level, the timeline was significantly compressed. The team had to move quickly without compromising quality or originality.

At the same time, the product had to:

  • Compete with established players like CAMCO, Barker, and Thetford

  • Fit naturally within Valterra’s existing waste management ecosystem

  • Introduce true differentiation, not just aesthetic updates

“SPARK really jumped into the foxhole with us. They didn’t feel like an outside vendor, but they became part of the team, took ownership, and stayed genuinely invested in finding the right solution.”
— Andy Mikesell, Product Manager, Valterra

The Solution

SPARK led the project from early conceptual innovation through to production-ready CAD and manufacturing support.

In early phases, SPARK identified key user pain points, explored new product directions, and developed patentable concepts that went beyond incremental improvements.

As the program accelerated, SPARK shifted into execution mode. The team:

  • Advanced concepts into manufacturable designs under a compressed timeline

  • Identified and engaged critical vendors for blow molding and metal component manufacturing

  • Assisted in vendor communications throughout the process

  • Helped navigate tradeoffs between cost, tooling strategy, and speed to market

  • Created full production CAD and documentation to support tooling and first shots

Because of the shortened timeline, the team pivoted away from overseas tooling and instead worked with domestic vendors to keep the program on track. SPARK played a central role in identifying the right partners and keeping development moving forward.

The Impact

SPARK helped Valterra turn an open-ended innovation effort into a fast-tracked development program while still delivering meaningful improvements for end users.

As a result of the collaboration, Valterra was able to:

  • Introduce a patent-pending tow-and-pull handle system that keeps the tank securely attached during transport, addressing a real safety risk

  • Improve the venting experience with a directional vent designed to send unpleasant odors away from the user

  • Make the tank easier to lift, empty, and clean through practical usability features like an easy-lift middle handle, clear view window, and 360-degree cleanout sprayer

  • Move from early concept exploration to manufacturing-ready design despite a compressed timeline

  • Bring new, defensible innovation into a mature product category through features customers can immediately see and use

Why it matters

Valterra met its accelerated timeline with a product that was both innovative and ready for production.

The tote tank represents more than a single product launch. It is:

  • Valterra’s first entry into this product category

  • A new revenue stream aligned with their core waste management brand

  • A platform for patent-protected innovation, and new IP in a legacy category

  • A safer, more secure transport solution for RV customers

The tow-and-pull system has the potential to become a defining feature of Valterra’s tote tank line and a visible differentiator in a crowded market.

In established categories, innovation often comes down to solving problems that users have learned to tolerate.

SPARK helped Valterra identify those problems and act on them quickly. By combining early-stage exploration with hands-on development and vendor engagement, the team was able to deliver meaningful improvements without slowing down when timelines tightened.

“SPARK didn’t help us create a ‘me too’ product. They helped us develop something differentiated– something that showed Valterra and Dometic what could be done and may be even better that we first imagined.”
— Andy Mikesell, Product Manager, Valterra
